In an ordinary court room, I attend a very hard trial as a juror, being unfamiliar with the whole procedure. The Crucifix’s icon up on the wall, the judges, the jurors, the counsels, the denunciators, the witnesses on their posts, everything goes on in a perfect order.

The defendant is on his dock. The handcuff is suspended from his right hand. Oh, my God! He is a 23-year old, young man. He is tall, blond, blue - eyed, with a pale face and …no expression. How can this handsomeness of his youth be combined with the distress of evil?

It was far away, in the desert of Mount Athos, where The Holy Father chose to live as a hermit. The place was secluded and the ground gnarled. It would be difficult for everyone to suspect that a human being could live there, alone, only with God. And what is his home? It is an impromptu hut that can be easily taken apart by a strong wind. It is in this hut that he has been worshipping and praying for everyone, for the rulers, for God’s plain human beings and for the godless and faithless people.
