Two fathers

(a true incident)

In an ordinary court room, I attend a very hard trial as a juror, being unfamiliar with the whole procedure. The Crucifix’s icon up on the wall, the judges, the jurors, the counsels, the denunciators, the witnesses on their posts, everything goes on in a perfect order.

The defendant is on his dock. The handcuff is suspended from his right hand. Oh, my God! He is a 23-year old, young man. He is tall, blond, blue - eyed, with a pale face and …no expression. How can this handsomeness of his youth be combined with the distress of evil?

He is guilty “on intention”. Why? What did he do? Well, being young and thoughtless, he neglected his principles, he quitted his studies and he got into troubles, he joined gangs and started getting drugs. And during an  crisis, when he lacked the drugs he killed his best friend by seven knife wounds….He deserves to get a life imprisonment, but the big-time lawyers try to give him another chance! They explain that he has been a divorced family’s child, he grew up having a lot of problems!
